Pharaoh of the late 18th Dynasty (reigned c. 1353–1336 BCE), born Amenhotep IV. In his first years he raised the Aten above the other gods, building it new temples at Karnak; in his fifth regnal year he changed his name and founded a new capital at Akhetaten. Later generations dismantled his monuments and struck him from the king lists. Reign dates follow the conventional chronology; all else attested.
