"Horizon of the Aten," the capital Akhenaten founded on virgin desert in Middle Egypt, laid out between cliffs whose notch frames the rising sun. Built at speed in talatat and mudbrick, occupied for barely a generation, and abandoned after the court returned to the old centers. Its modern name is Amarna.
