"Horizon of the Aten," the capital Akhenaten founded on virgin desert in Middle Egypt, laid out between cliffs whose notch Cyril Aldred read as the hieroglyph for horizon, and in which Juan Antonio Belmonte found the sun rising on the date he matches to the city’s foundation. Built at speed in talatat and mudbrick, occupied for barely a generation, and abandoned after the court returned to the old centers. Its modern name is Amarna.
