The workhorse and the showpiece of Nile transport. Grain, stone, cattle, and coffins all moved by barge, towed or under sail; the gods travelled in gilded ceremonial barques modelled on them, and a royal funeral was above all a river procession. With the Nile as Egypt's only highway, the barge occupied the place roads and wagons held in other lands.
