A guard of leather or rawhide strapped round the wrist and lower forearm to take the snap of the bowstring as an arrow is loosed. Egyptian archers wore it from early times, and in the New Kingdom, the age of the composite bow and the chariot, it was common gear for bowmen, officers and kings; reliefs and tomb paintings show it on the forearm of figures drawing the bow.
