Memphis (Men-nefer, the White Walls)

< 1 min read

Egypt's ancient administrative capital where the valley opens into the northern marshes, city of Ptah, and the seat of government to which power returned after Akhetaten was abandoned; its oldest name, the White Walls (Ineb-hedj), recalls the fortress of its founding. Its temple name, Hutkaptah, 'the house of the ka of Ptah', came through Greek to give Egypt its name. Book 1 opens at Akhetaten and moves here for its later chapters.
