Eighth king of the 18th Dynasty (throne name Menkheperure), father of Amenhotep III and grandfather of Akhenaten. His Dream Stela between the paws of the Great Sphinx tells how the god promised him the throne for clearing the sand from the monument, and he sealed Egypt's alliance with Mitanni by marrying a daughter of its king Artatama, as one of the Amarna Letters later recalls. Robbers broke into his tomb in the Valley of the Kings; in Horemheb's reign Maya renewed the burial, as a graffito in the tomb records.
